What is Clicker Training??

If you have ever been to a dolphin show you have seen the principles of clicker training in action. If you think about the event you have heard the clicks or whistles during the show as the animals are working. What these trainers are using is a “marker” – a unique sound such as a whistle, click, or word to select the behavior they want and let the animal know it will be rewarded.

So, the trainer chooses a behavior and “clicks” it as it is happening. The click tells the animal exactly what it did to earn the food, praise, petting, or toy that follows.

The science –based technique for this method is called “Operant Conditioning” All this really means is – modifying (conditioning) behavior by reinforcing the desired response (operant, or operating).

Dogs respond very well to this type of training. It can be used for simple beginning behaviors such as sit, down, stay, or come. As well as for more complicated behaviors such as advanced obedience or tricks. And any age dog can learn this method. You can start with puppies as early as 7-8 weeks up to older dogs 8 or older.
